The Two Most Popular Types of Massages are Swedish and Deep Tissue

Swedish Massage in Tempe Arizona.  Sounds a bit absurd, but not only is the massage purely for relaxation, but when you are done, you go outside of our studio at Twisted Herb Alchemy and you look out a bright beautiful sunshine and have a blast of nice warm air on your skin.

Swedish massage is the most common and best-known type of massage in the West. If it’s your first time at our facility or you don’t get massage very often, Swedish massage is the perfect massage for you.

If you want deeper work and can tolerate more pressure, even momentary discomfort, to get relief from muscle pain, it’s better to book a deep tissue massage, which is another form of Swedish massage but with much more pressure on the body. .

Swedish massage and other types of therapeutic massage are performed by trained, licensed massage therapists. A Swedish massage can be slow and gentle, or vigorous and bracing, depending on the therapist’s personal style and what he or she wants to achieve.

Why It’s Called Swedish Massage (FACT)

Swedish massage is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology as opposed to energy work that is more common in Asian-style massage. Both Swedish massage and physical therapy were pioneered by a Swedish physiologist, Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839)at the University of Stockholm.

In the early 19th century he developed a system called “Medical Gymnastics” which included movements performed by a therapist. These became the known as “Swedish movements” in Europe and “the Swedish Movement Cure” when they came to the U.S. in 1858. Today it is simply known as Swedish massage.

Swedish massage is the foundation for other types of Western massage, including sports massage, deep tissue massage and aromatherapy massage.

Why is it Called Deep Tissue Massage

A deep tissue massage is deeper pressure from a Licensed Massage Therapist in beautiful Tempe Arizona. It is usually done for pain relief and for therapeutic purposes.  It’s a good idea to let the person making the appointment know what you are looking for in your massage such as deep pressure or discomfort areas. They can then steer you toward the therapist who best meets your needs. Also, it’s fine to ask your massage therapist to make changes and go lighter rather than deeper in a session. You don’t have to have a “cookie cutting deep tissue massage”, meaning having the same massage the previous person had. It’s your hour and your money – speak up! Your therapist wants you to leave satisfied, but they are not psychic and perceptions of pressure vary wildly from one person to another. We can’t know if you don’t tell us. Most of the time, pressure differs even from one part of the body to another. Somebody may like deeper pressure on their back but lighter pressure on their legs. It all depends.

A seasoned therapist will ask you what your pressure preferences are before the massage as well as check in with you at least once during the massage to make sure all is well. Newer therapists seem to have a harder time asking for feedback, fearing they are disrupting the client’s relaxation by asking questions.

A therapist may need to use deep pressure to relieve “knots” under the skin. “Knots” are caused by a damaging muscle/connective tissue combined with swelling/sensitivity from the following immune response. Massage has been conclusively shown in clinical trials to increase blood flow and remove toxins. The amount of soreness has nothing to do with muscle flexibility or alignment.
Massage has been shown to decrease stress/stress hormone levels, help with relaxation, and a lot of other “it’s all in your head, but what’s in your head actually really matters” factors.

Whether you can tolerate a deep tissue massage is entirely up to you. Also, some therapists are stronger than others. It is up to the client to inform the therapist of the amount of pressure he/she can tolerate.
